Fly Fishing Skaneateles Creek and Finger Lakes Trout Streams
Sunset Side Cottage puts you within a short drive of some of Central New York's best trout water. Spend the day on Skaneateles Creek, Grout Brook or Owasco Inlet, then come home for an evening of bass fishing off the renters dock. Bringing a boat? Keep it on the cottage mooring overnight for your whole stay.

Trout Streams Near the Cottage
Drive times are from the cottage, checked in Google Maps in October 2026.
- Skaneateles Creek via the Charlie Major Nature Trail (14 min): the lake's outlet, open all year for catch and release with artificial lures only. The trail follows the old rail bed beside the creek, and DEC stocked it with rainbow trout in spring 2026. Much of the creek is private, so stay on public land.
- Grout Brook, Scott (17 min): the lake's best-known spring run of wild rainbows, with DEC public fishing rights.
- Owasco Inlet, Moravia (42 min): 13.3 miles of DEC public fishing rights on a classic brown and rainbow trout stream.
- The Troutfitter Fly Shop, Syracuse (40 min): the closest full fly shop we found for flies, tippet and local reports.
Bass Fishing From the Renters Dock
Back at the cottage, the renters dock is a relaxed spot to fish for bass in the evening, and the clear water lets you watch fish cruise the shallows. The NYS DEC lists both smallmouth and largemouth bass in Skaneateles Lake, along with rock bass, yellow perch and other panfish that keep kids busy. Two kayaks are included if you want to work the shoreline at dawn or dusk.
Bring Your Boat
Renters can use the cottage mooring, about 30 feet off the renters dock. Launch at the NYS DEC ramp on Route 41A (15 min) and keep your boat on the mooring overnight for your whole stay, ready to troll for lake trout, rainbows and landlocked salmon. No boat? Skaneateles Marina (18 min) rents them by the hour or day. New York requires boats and trailers to be cleaned, drained and dried before launching.
Comforts for Anglers
- Laundry room with washer and dryer for wet gear and fishing clothes
- Early-morning friendly: coffee maker, kettle and a quiet lane to the water
- Parking for 4 cars at the cottage
Licenses and Regulations
A New York State fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older. Buy one online through the DEC's licensing system at decals.east.licensing.app or from a license agent. DEC currently lists 1-day, 7-day and annual options for residents and non-residents; see the DEC fishing license page for current prices.
- Skaneateles Lake: trout and salmon are open all year with a 15-inch minimum and 5 per day combined (no more than 3 of one species). Possessing alewife is prohibited.
- Skaneateles Creek from the Old Seneca Turnpike bridge north of the village downstream to the Jordan Road bridge in Jordan: open all year, catch and release, artificial lures only.
- Lake tributaries such as Grout Brook: April 1 to December 31 with special Finger Lakes tributary limits.
Rules change, so read the current DEC freshwater fishing regulations before you fish.

Fishing Questions
Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Renters are welcome to keep a boat on the mooring, about 30 feet off the renters dock, overnight for the length of their stay. Launch at the DEC ramp on Route 41A. The owners' dock to the right is private, so please use the renters dock and mooring only.

There is no dedicated wader room, but the full laundry room and dryer help with wet gear. Please keep muddy boots outside.
When is the best fishing?
Spring brings the wild rainbow run on Grout Brook and the April 1 opener on most trout streams. Skaneateles Creek is catch and release all year. Summer evenings are best for bass off the dock.
